Council has already met with representatives from the Avalon Chamber of Commerce and the Avalon Preservation Society about this issue. There is an acknowledged level of concern about removal of mature trees, which needs to be balanced against ongoing costs and safety. This is never an easy decision, and so Council is interested in broader community feedback at this time.

  • Background

Council has an ongoing issue with the pavement outside numbers 51-55 Old Barrenjoey Road, which needs to be resolved.

The root systems of four existing Casuarina trees are causing damage to surrounding pavement areas, creating trip hazards and public safety issues. Council's Tree Preservation Officer has recommended the removal of the trees as the damage caused by the root systems will be ongoing.

Council staff have developed a proposal to remove the trees, delineate the garden bed with sandstone, realign the garden bed to allow better pedestrian movement, provide tree and shrub planting, and new paving and seating.

Retaining the trees and re-paving this area would result in an ongoing cost to Council and is a public safety liability. For this reason, removal of the trees and upgrading the area with sandstone garden beds and new vegetation planting is Council's preferred option.
