  • Ocean Street Narrabeen - Proposal to name a reserve.

The President of the Surfrider Foundation Australia Northern Beaches Branch made a request to Council to name the reserve to recognise the contribution of Tom and Margaret Kirsop to the community. It also references the former operation of surfboard riding clubs along the Collaroy Narrabeen coastline.

Tom is a tireless coastal advocate and Margaret, a notorius blood donor and social advocate. Together they have had a significant impact on a broad range of the Northern Beaches culture and community.

Tom and Margaret have been responsible for establishing various branches of The Surfrider Foundation across Sydney, including the Northern Beaches, Eastern Beaches and Cronulla.
Tom Kirsop was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his dedication to the environment. The OAM was principally awarded for work that Tom has done with the Surfrider Foundation but also for other projects with coastal national parks. He has also been heavily involved in local issues including membership on council community committees.

  • Dedication of bridge and section of trail progressing

The Narrabeen Lagoon Trail was officially opened on 25 February and we are in the process of formalising the dedication of a section of the trail just west of the Deep Creek Bridge to Mr Graham Jones and the bridge crossing Middle Creek to Mr Jim Somerville. The families of both men have been contacted and are very happy to accept and support the dedication.

Mr Jones and Mr Somerville made invaluable contributions to the Warringah community and were instrumental in progressing the Narrabeen Lagoon Trail project.

  • Naming Sections of the Narrabeen Lagoon Trail

We are seeking public submissions to posthumously name sections of the Narrabeen Lagoon Trail.

Council has received nominations to name parts of the trail after two dedicated community members.

The Middle Creek Bridge will be dedicated to Mr Jim Somerville for his tireless contributions to a trail being completed around the Lagoon

The section of trail immediately west of the Deep Creek Bridge will be dedicated to Mr Graham Jones for his early vision of a trail that would circumnavigate this waterway.

Council invites feedback on the above proposal, and would like to call for nominations for any other appropriate community members who could be honoured in this manner.

    Make a submission:

    • Write to Council marked: “Narrabeen Lagoon Nominations” Warringah Council, 725 Pittwater Road, Dee Why, NSW 2099
    • Email council@warringah.nsw.gov.au.
Submissions close on 18 January 2015.
