  • Background

Thanks to funding from the NSW Government, we’ve been working with the community since 2018 to design better connections between Newport and Avalon. You shared your thoughts, and we listened - after our first consultation in 2020, we refined the designs based on your feedback.

  • What's next

Learn how we are managing the works

Construction started mid-September 2025 and is expected to be completed by early 2026, weather permitting.

Works will typically take place Monday to Friday, between 7am and 5pm.

To minimise traffic impacts of these works, and to reconstruct a section of the traffic barriers at the Newport Beach end, some night works will be required. Before this happens, nearby residents will receive advance notice from the contractor.

A site compound will be established in the Newport Beach carpark to aid construction works for the duration of the project. Access to the existing walkway will be maintained during this period, and any temporary closures will be notified in advance.

You may experience some construction noise, traffic disruptions and limited public access during construction. We appreciate your patience as we deliver this important community upgrade.

What this project means for you

  • A safer and more enjoyable journey

Whether you’re walking, riding, or using a mobility aid, the new off-road path will provide a safer, smoother connection between Newport and Bilgola — away from traffic and steep terrain.

  • Better access to nature and the beach

The path will travel through Eric Green Reserve, making it easier to enjoy green open space and reach both beaches without barriers.

  • Comfortable and inclusive design

The path surface will be non-slip, with handrails to support people of all ages and abilities. Cyclists will benefit from bike-friendly features too.

  • Lighting that works for everyone

Discreet, low-glow lighting will make the path safer to use in low light while protecting the natural environment and local wildlife.

  • A greener, healthier environment

New native trees and plants will make the route more pleasant to use, provide shade, attract birds, and support biodiversity in our local area.
