What we're proposing

What we're proposing

Together, we treasure Manly Lagoon's stunning natural landscape – and now we're making it safer for everyone to enjoy and travel across this local gem. After hearing your calls for better walking and bike riding connections at this location, we're excited to announce plans for a dedicated bridge alongside the existing road crossing over Manly Lagoon in North Manly to help reduce the interface with cars.

This new 4 metre wide bridge will offer a safe path away from the busy Pittwater Road, connecting Aitken Avenue and Hinkler Park. A new raised pedestrian crossing at Aitken Avenue and energy efficient lighting will also be included in the upgrade. This project will improve our local facilities and encourage people to walk or bike more, making our community safer and better connected.

A Review of Environmental Factors has been completed to identify and reduce possible environmental effects.

Thanks to our community's strong support, we secured a $3.95m grant from Transport for NSW for this project. See the background tab for details.

What are the main benefits for our community?

  • Safety

A dedicated, well-lit bridge ensures safer journeys for walkers and bike riders, away from busy traffic.

  • Accessibility

The wide 4 metre design provides ample room, reducing crowding and accommodating everyone comfortably.

  • Connectivity

The bridge offers better connections to local shops, schools, playgrounds and other recreational facilities, encouraging healthy, active travel options.

  • Sustainability

It supports local plans for a more liveable, sustainable area while encouraging walking and bike riding options and outdoor experience of the Northern Beaches.

Background

In 2022, we proposed to build a 3 metre wide pedestrian and cycle bridge on Pittwater Road, Queenscliff as part of our Move – Northern Beaches Transport Strategy. This was in response to community calls for better safety for bike riders over Manly Lagoon.

We engaged the community on this proposal between 25 January to 18 February 2022 and received 285 comments, with 94% of respondents supporting the bridge concept. Community feedback emphasised safety concerns and the current bridge's narrowness leading to conflicts with walkers and bike riders and traffic proximity issues. You can read more on the outcomes of engagement in the Community Engagement Report.

This feedback helped secure our Get NSW Active 2023/24 funding from Transport for NSW, resulting in a $3.95m grant. We have since been collaborating with technical and environmental experts to develop a concept design that serves our community while preserving the natural environment.
