New playground now open

The popular Birdwood Playground at North Narrabeen Beach reopened in late June 2020.

All the equipment was replaced and rebuilt within the footprint of the old playground as part of our Playground Renewal Program.

Thank you to everyone who commented on the concept design for the playground during the consultation. We held two rounds of engagement:

Stage 1: 28 August to 29 September 2019 (109 comments received)

Stage 2: 13 December and 16 February 2020 (97 submissions received)

Overall, most people were in support of the upgrade. Based on the feedback received, a pod swing, high-backed swing seat and climbing elements were installed in addition to the new slippery dip. We also introduced a new fence and more seating.

Additional facilities including exercise equipment and other play elements may be considered in the future as part of the Open Space and Recreation Strategy.

Project history

As part of our Playground Renewal Program, we are proposing to replace the existing playground equipment at Birdwood Park, adjacent to the North Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club.

The new playground will be within the existing footprint and will include new equipment, softfall, furniture, fence and the addition of some landscaping.

Council has an approved budget in 2019/20 to develop a concept plan and to renew the playground.

Not included in this project:

  • shade structure
  • amenities building upgrade
  • reserve upgrade
  • carpark upgrade

We received 109 comments during the first stage of engagement from 28 August to 29 September 2019.

Comments included:

  • requests for play equipment suited for a mix of young and older kids
  • nature-based design and materials
  • shade over the playground.

Following your feedback, we have selected a playground design that incorporates activities and equipment that you asked for and that compliments the local area.
