Playground construction scheduled

Thank you to the 97 people who commented on the concept design for the playground between 13 December 2019 and 16 February 2020.

Overall, 78 percent of responses were in support of the concept. Many of the comments were very similar to the suggestions and ideas collected in the preliminary engagement stage, including the need for:

  • shade cloth/sun protection
  • a mix of equipment, particularly something for older children
  • the use of natural materials
  • more seating
  • more swings.

At this stage, the size of the playground will remain the same. Additional facilities including exercise equipment and other play elements may be considered as part of the Open Space and Recreation Strategy.

We are also considering options for installing additional shade and seating within the playground early next financial year.

The design will now be finalised, with construction scheduled to commence soon.

As part of our Playground Renewal Program, we are proposing to replace the existing playground equipment at Birdwood Park, adjacent to the North Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club.

The new playground will be within the existing footprint and will include new equipment, softfall, furniture, fence and the addition of some landscaping.

Council has an approved budget in 2019/20 to develop a concept plan and to renew the playground.

Not included in this project:

  • shade structure
  • amenities building upgrade
  • reserve upgrade
  • carpark upgrade

We received 109 comments during the first stage of engagement from 28 August to 29 September 2019.

Comments included:

  • requests for play equipment suited for a mix of young and older kids
  • nature-based design and materials
  • shade over the playground.

Following your feedback, we have selected a playground design that incorporates activities and equipment that you asked for and that compliments the local area.
