We are upgrading Currawong Beach Wharf to improve accessibility for users and the local community. The Currawong site is an important location for our community, it is listed on the State Heritage Register and we are managing the works sensitively in association with Office of Environment and Heritage and in alignment with the Conservation Management Plan for the area.
We met with local resident groups throughout development of the concept and detailed design, and then went out to community consultation to to hear from the wider community on any additional feedback.
A draft Review of Environmental Factors (REF) was prepared, outlining how we will manage all environmental and heritage considerations during the works. Construction would be timed to avoid interference with seahorse breeding season.
We invited you to view the 3D render image below and provide your feedback by:
The design has taken a number of impacts into consideration, including:
We engaged a local ecologist to provide advice and a report regarding ecological impacts on the site. We have also engaged a heritage consultant to assist us in delivering these sensitive works. These recommendations have informed our draft Review of Environmental Factors (REF).
The most significant environmental impact from construction would be potential damage to Posidonia Grass (seagrass) and the White Seahorses.
To mitigate these risks specialised dive teams will relocate all seahorses before any demolition works commence. Construction would be timed to avoid the seahorse breeding season.
Barge work will also be undertaken to minimise any potential damage to seagrass.
Mitigation measures may include:
No, there is an issue of the structure meeting accessibility requirements and the need to cater for our growing aging community needs.
This type of wharf upgrade provides improved disability access to the wharf, as well as minimising the long-term maintenance requirements.
A floating pontoon is not viable in this location due to wave velocity and height. The weather conditions at this area is a constraint that the design team have had to factor in and the tidal stairs are the best option.
Yes, we looked at the option of a pontoon, however it is not a viable option due to the wave height and velocity at this location.
Yes, we considered this during the design stage to ensure the impact on number of dinghy moorings available, the monitoring will continue to be managed by Transport for NSW.
The final number of tie-ups will be determined in the final design.
Tidal steps and ramps will be provided on the wharf for day-to-day access by visitors and occupants.
During construction:
We are investigating options for a temporary structure for use during construction, this will be discussed with the successful contractor at the tender stage to provide the best outcome.
Yes, we have been working with the ferry operators to ensure the wharf will meet their present and future needs.
The design work was jointly funded by the NSW Government and Northern Beaches Council. In addition, grant funding will be used to build the upgrade. Construction is scheduled to take place in 2026/27.
