Council decision

Additional permanent courts not supported

In response to a request from the Northern Beaches Volleyball Association (NBVA) Council publicly exhibited a plan to install up to two additional permanent courts on Manly Beach between the northern most permanent court and the stairs opposite Carlton Street.

The exhibition period was from Wednesday 18 May 2022 to Sunday 19 June 2022. We received 1063 unique responses.

As the feedback received showed varying levels of support and opposition to the proposal, it was concluded that the case for change had not been met and that:

  • The NBVA proposal for additional permanent volleyball courts on Manly Beach is not supported.
  • Council's Parks and Recreation and Compliance teams will monitor the impact of ball sports on Manly Beach and brief Council on options in early 2024.

See the Community and Stakeholder Engagement Report for the assessment and review of all feedback received and Council's responses.

What was proposed

To address the growing demand for volleyball courts at Manly Beach, we were asked to consider a proposal by the Northern Beaches Volleyball Association (NBVA) for additional courts.

We wanted to understand the community's views before making a decision on providing up to two additional permanent volleyball courts on Manly Beach. To achieve this we undertook consultation on the proposal between 18 May and 19 June 2022.

Feedback was reviewed and considered and the outcomes of engagement are published on this page.

The proposal would have included installing two posts and a volleyball net for each additional permanent court, situated between the northern most existing court and the stairs opposite Carlton Street.

The proposed courts would be available for casual community use when not being used by the NBVA or other Council approved bookings.
