Northern Beaches Council is responsible for the identification of flood prone land in the Local Government Area (LGA). Council also has a key role in the management of risks to life and property from flooding. In this regard, one of the most important activities undertaken by Council is to increase our community's awareness of flooding so that people are better able to understand and plan for the flood risks they face.

A consolidated flood study has not previously been conducted for the Manly to Seaforth Flood Study area. The Study defines existing and future flood behaviour, which will then be used to establish how best to manage identified flood risks.

The draft Manly to Seaforth Flood Study has been prepared to understand flood risks in the catchments of the former Manly Council area, draining to Middle Harbour, North Harbour and the Tasman Sea. The study includes the suburbs of Balgowlah Heights, Clontarf and parts of Balgowlah, Fairlight, Manly and Seaforth.

Community involvement in managing flood risks is essential for:

  • raising awareness in the community about the potential for flooding in the catchment
  • improving the decision making process
