Clubhouse naming proposal adopted

We have named the clubhouse at Lionel Watts Oval, Frenchs Forest after Eric Galloway, Life Member and stalwart of Belrose Rugby League Football Club where he has served as a board member since 1985.

The clubhouse naming is in recognition of Eric Galloway's contribution to the Belrose Rugby League Football Club and our community.

The naming was adopted at the Council meeting held on Tuesday 26 April 2022.

Exhibited proposal

We exhibited a proposal to name the clubhouse at Lionel Watts Oval, Eric Galloway Clubhouse late in 2021.

The clubhouse is located at the eastern end of Lionel Watts Oval on Blackbutts Road, Frenchs Forest, and is the home base of the Belrose Rugby League Football Club. Currently the clubhouse is informally referred to as the Belrose Rugby League Clubhouse.

Eric Galloway is a Life Member and stalwart of Belrose Rugby League Football Club where he has served as a board member since 1985.

Mr Galloway was awarded a Centenary Medal for services to sport in 2001. This medal was established in 2001 to recognise people who have contributed to Australian society or government.

Eric Galloway is also a valued life member and ex-board member of Manly Warringah Rugby League. In 2017, he was awarded the Ray Stellar Award (Club Person of the year) by the New South Wales Rugby League for his contribution to the football code. He has been heavily involved with cricket as well as rugby league.

Mr Galloway was the President of the Manly Warringah Pittwater Sporting Union for many years, where he was directly involved in the significant development and upgrade of sporting facilities and the management of sports fields across the Northern Beaches, with former Manly, Pittwater and Warringah Councils.

This proposal aligned with the Naming our Reserves, Facilities and Roads Policy and was exhibited between 1 October and 14 November 2021. During the exhibition 223 submissions were received.

Over 80% of submissions were supportive of the proposal. Those that were opposed to the proposal noted a preference for other names.

A report noting the outcomes of engagement and recommending adoption of the proposal is was presented to Council at the meeting held on Tuesday 26 April 2022.
