Construction complete

Narrabeen Lagoon Trail is an 8.4km multi-use trail that provides our community and visitors a connection around the whole lagoon through beautiful ecosystems, an abundance of wildlife, cultural heritage and historical icons. Since its completion in 2015, we have upgraded several sections of the trail to ensure the safety of all users.

The section of path across the Pittwater Road Bridge is an important part of the trail which was a safety hazard for cyclist and pedestrian users of the bridge as it created a bottleneck.

We have now completed the three metre wide pedestrian and cycle bridge alongside the existing road bridge to eliminate the current pinch-point, increasing safety for users of the bridge and trail.

The works were funded under Transport for NSW’s B-Line project to improve pedestrian and cycle links along Pittwater Road.

Updates

The new pedestrian and cycle bridge is nearing completion.

However, due to a manufacturing issue with the bridge’s decking, construction will take a little longer than planned.

Works should be complete by mid-September, weather permitting.

Night works will be carried out on the construction of the bridge between 14 and 24 June 2022.

The hours of work take place Monday to Friday between 7pm and 5am.

To allow construction the pedestrian footpath will be closed from 14 to 24 June, excluding weekends, while we upgrade the footpaths at either end of the bridge.

Access will remain open over the weekends.

For your safety, please cross at the traffic lights and use the eastern side of the bridge to cross.

Construction works on Narrabeen’s new pedestrian and cycle bridge are well underway.

Environmental controls are in place, the vegetation has been cleared and the piers have been installed and cut to the finished height.

The bridge is being built alongside the Pittwater Road Bridge to provide walkers and cyclists on the Narrabeen Lagoon Trail with a safer path, away from vehicles.

If you’re wondering why the bridge looks a little different to the original designs, it’s because our engineers advised that more piers were needed. The additional piers will minimise the amount of bounce people feel when using the bridge and accommodate a viewing platform where you will be able to stop, relax and enjoy the view.

The piers have been carefully aligned with those under the Pittwater Road Bridge to allow boats and other small watercraft to sail straight through. While their dark appearance ensures they blend into the natural environment.

In addition to the bridge works, we will also replace around 20 metres of existing footpath either side of the new bridge to link it with the Narrabeen Lagoon Trail.

Unfortunately, the timeline for this project has been pushed out due to rain, material delays and increased scope. It is now expected to be completed mid-September.

Site establishment is now underway with construction due to commence early next week (from 24 Jan 2022).

The existing path along the western side of the vehicle bridge along Pittwater Road will be temporarily closed during construction. Pedestrian diversions will be in place.

Completion of works are expected for May 2022, weather permitting.

As a result of COVID related restrictions, works to the Narrabeen Lagoon Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge have been delayed.

Works will now start mid January 2022 meaning there will be no disruption of the area over the Christmas period.

This will also allow time for elements of the bridge to be fabricated offsite and ensure smoother installation once ready.

Works are expected to be completed in May 2022, weather permitting.

We have now completed the procurement process and are about to appoint a head contractor to deliver the project.

Council are currently working with the contractor to finalise detailed design plans.

Once finalised, we will have a clearer view of timing for construction commencement.

In 2018, Council engaged with the community on a proposal to build a new 3 meter wide pedestrian and cycle bridge alongside the existing road bridge.

The proposal was well-received by community who are eager to see improvements to pedestrian and cyclist safety along this well-known pinch point.

Based on feedback received during consultation, the revised design now includes:

  • Improvements to entry and exit points
  • Low-level lighting
  • Use of hardwood and stainless steels materials for handrails
  • Improved signage

Council will be commencing the tendering stage in September 2020.

Construction is expected to commence mid-2021

Revised plans can be viewed in the document library.

Council has been working to make adjustments to the funding arrangement which will allow the project to proceed.

It expected that the tender to construct the new pedestrian and cycle bridge will be released in July.

Construction is proposed to start later this year.

We have been working away on this project, carrying out investigations and further developing the design for the proposed multi-use bridge.

We can't release the concept design at this stage but we can tell you that we heard what you said during consultation and we have incorporated the key items that were raised.

We are extending the bridge and widening the footpath at the western end to ensure that there are no bottle necks created.

We are also making the bridge wide so there is enough room for multi-use

We will be planting more trees and re-establishing the sea grass.

The existing bridge along Pittwater Road, Narrabeen, was built in 1946. Due to the narrow width of the existing pedestrian path on the western side of the bridge, it is not suitable to be used as a shared path.

The existing road bridge has a limited lifespan and when it is upgraded it will be constructed to a higher flood level to comply with current bridge design standards (to the same level as the new pedestrian and cycle bridge).

We are not proposing to upgrade the existing road bridge as part of this project.

We are proposing to build a new pedestrian and cycle bridge at Pittwater Road, over Narrabeen Lagoon.

We are seeking your feedback on the aesthetic elements of the concept design.

The proposed multi-use bridge will be a three metre wide pedestrian and cycle bridge located three metres to the west of the existing road bridge.

The piers of the new bridge will be aligned with those of the existing bridge to maintain navigational channels beneath the bridge.

During extreme storm events Pittwater Road Narrabeen is subject to flooding. To reduce the flood risk and to comply with current bridge design standards, the height of the new multi-use bridge will need to be elevated above the height of the existing bridge.
