Why do we need more footpaths?

Footpaths are essential for providing safe walking routes for community members to access shops, parks, and public transport. In our 20-year Transport Strategy, Move 2038, we aim to double 'active travel' trips and decrease car trips by 30%.

How are new footpath locations chosen?

Each financial year, we develop the New Footpath Program in line with directions set out in the Northern Beaches Walking Plan. The Northern Beaches Walking Plan outlines steps to enhance walkability and connectivity in our community.

This program delivers new footpaths at prioritised locations to improve our walking network and help connect our community. In order to prioritise and deliver footpaths in areas where they are most needed, the following six criteria are used:

• Land-use (e.g. proximity to shopping centres/main street, hospitals, recreational facilities, parks and schools)

• Safety

• Continuity (i.e. completing missing links)

• Traffic impact (road hierarchy)

• Pedestrian demand

• Proximity to public transport routes
