What is proposed
We have been working with the Department of Education to identify suitable sites within our area for the shared use of sportsfields.
Council is committed to providing opportunities for healthy active lifestyles to combat social isolation and childhood obesity.
We are proposing sportsfield lighting at Northern Beaches Secondary College (NBSC) - Freshwater Senior Campus to enable the use of the grounds outside of school hours.
The Northern Beaches Sportsground Strategy identified a shortage of sportsfields on the Northern Beaches. This shortfall will be met by using existing sportsgrounds more efficiently and increasing usage through actions such as installing lights, improving drainage and reconfiguring the fields.
As a result we have entered into a 10-year licencing agreement with the Department of Education to use the NBSC - Freshwater Senior Campus for community sport.
As part of the agreement we will be improving the sportsfield facilities with the installation of four new light posts (pending development approval) for evening training and competition opportunities.
The lighting infrastructure is designed to Australian Standards which limits the amount of 'obtrusive' lighting, minimising the impact on surrounding properties while ensuring a safe level of lighting for sport.
Outcomes of engagement
Between 24 July and 20 August 2023, we asked for your feedback on the NBSC - Freshwater Senior Campus proposed sportsfield lighting. We received 669 responses, with a majority in support of the lighting proposal.
Further details on the responses, including all comments, is available in the Community and Stakeholder Engagement Report.
