Comment on the concept plans

We are seeking to improve local streets for everyone in the North Balgowlah area. We are proposing to implement safer speed limits and new traffic infrastructure treatments, to make our local residential streets pleasant places to live and visit with calmer and quieter traffic, as well as making it safer for people walking, bike riding and driving in the North Balgowlah area.

Our Road Network Future Directions under the Move - Northern Beaches Transport Strategy 2038 includes returning residential streets to the local residents through better network management.

As part of the safer neighbourhoods program, Council is looking to deliver this as well as other staged traffic improvements for the North Balgowlah precinct in the coming years.

What's proposed?

We are proposing to install new infrastructure treatments such as roundabouts, raised pedestrian crossings, pedestrian refuges, traffic calming devices such as flat top speed humps, chicanes, centre medians, line marking and signage in North Balgowlah, so that our streets are designed for safer speeds.

We are proposing to introduce a 40km/h speed limit on residential streets in North Balgowlah (as indicated on the map below) to reflect the strong sense of community in the suburb and higher levels of active travel including by school aged children. By establishing a comprehensive 40km/h zone and implementing traffic calming infrastructure treatments, we are taking significant steps to ensure our streets are safer for our community. Implementing traffic calming infrastructure will assist with the change to a slower speed zone, helping it to feel more intuitive.

  • Key features

Raised pedestrian crossings: These crossings would be added at strategic locations to make it easier and safer for people to cross the road, while also helping to encourage safer traffic speeds.

Local roads for local residents: By encouraging through traffic to remain on main roads and key movement corridors, we’re intending to create quieter and more pleasant streets for people living in and visiting the area.

  • Key benefits

    • Improved safety with safer speed limits and enhanced crossings
    • Safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists, encouraging active lifestyles
    • Enhanced overall travel experience in the area
    • Safer connections to the existing off-road, shared-user path to Manly
    • Increased independence for local students walking and riding to school
    • Increased community connectivity to schools and shops
    • Better quality of life for both residents and visitors
