Engagement outcomes

Project snapshot

We asked you for feedback on a proposal to install a secure bike cage at Dee Why Beach (similar to those at the Whistler Street carpark in Manly and the PCYC carpark in Dee Why). The bike cage will complement nearby bike facilities including the repair stand and separated cycleway on The Strand.

The proposal was exhibited between Friday 4 August and Sunday 3 September 2023. We received 87 responses. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback.

Feedback indicated a high level of support for the proposed bike cage with comments citing the anticipated benefits for residents and visitors, by making it easier to ride a bike to Dee Why Beach. Some respondents suggested that the proposed access card and pricing structure should be reconsidered to ensure it allows for casual usage. We will further investigate opportunities to allow for casual usage of the bike cage.

Respondents who were not supportive of the proposal felt that there were other priorities that Council could focus on. As per the Northern Beaches Move Transport Strategy 2038 and Northern Beaches Bike Plan, we have a commitment to provide the community with easy and safe transport options. This includes walking and bike riding, particularly for short trips, which can lead to economic, environmental, and social benefits.

You can view the consultation findings, including all comments received, in the Community Engagement Report.

Next steps

Staff are currently finalising the design including refinements based on community feedback. A further update will be provided before construction commences after the summer peak.

Background

The proposal

The structure will be attached to the eastern wall of the amenities block near the SLSC, the roof of the amenities block will be extended across the cage. This location has been selected after careful consideration of limited space in a busy location.

The bike will have room for up to 20 bikes, and can be will accessed via an access card purchased from Council. More information about access is available in the FAQs.

Being in such a prominent location we are mindful that the design of the secure bike cage needs to be in keeping with the streetscape and surrounds. The specific site has been selected bearing in mind space constraints and the needs of the Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC).

We are also looking into lighting and CCTV options as part of the proposal.

This initiative is in line with Council’s Move – Northern Beaches Transport Strategy 2038 and Northern Beaches Bike Plan. The project is funded as part of Council's operational budget.
