The proposed shared path would allow for greater active transport options, recreational opportunities and connectivity between:

• Pittwater Rugby Park
• Narrabeen Lagoon and Beaches
• Warriewood B-Line
• Warriewood Square
• Warriewood Community Centre (to be constructed)
• Narrabeen Education Precinct

Yes, We propose to remove four on-street car parking spaces on the eastern side of Lake Park Road to construct the shared path.

We will explore the removal of trees in Collins Street through community engagement and will also seek advice from our Tree Management Officers.

As the current trees impact on the electricity infrastructure, Council will also engage with Ausgrid on their removal and suitable replacement trees in Collins Street.

Council has adopted the Move – Northern Beaches Transport Strategy which outlines future directions of transport infrastructure, to reduce congestion and change travel behaviour. One of the key directions in the strategy is to:

“Prioritise smart, active travel network improvements (through technology, end of trip facilities and way-finding signage). Expand footpath and shared path networks to improve connectivity and safety, making walking and cycling attractive alternatives to the car.”

These projects are in line with this key direction.

There is currently over 100km of shared path across the Northern Beaches which forms the majority of our area’s Safe Cycling Network.

Transport for NSW Centre for Road Safety released a discussion paper on shared paths in 2015. The concluding remarks, based on evidence, stated that shared paths represent a relatively low safety risk.

Currently, children up to the age of 16, accompanying adults and adults carrying children are legally allowed to ride a bicycle on a footpath. Creating a wider path helps provide more space for everybody.

Shared paths provide improved safety for all path users and offer greater active transport options and recreational benefits designed to enhance connectivity to transport, schools and shops.

Bicycle lanes without adequate safety buffers are no longer installed or considered suitable to be included as part of the Northern Beaches Safe Cycling Network.

Treatments acceptable for the Safe Cycling Network include shared paths, separated cycleways, shared zones, quiet local streets and safe road crossings.

The Northern Beaches Bike Plan states that bicycle lanes adjacent to car parking will be replaced with an alternative treatment when opportunities arise.
