Shared path

Construction complete

Earlier this year we engaged with you on a proposal to construct a 2.5m shared path in Collins Street, North Narrabeen - eastern side between Lake Park Road and Walsh Street. However, the feedback we received was not supportive of this proposal and instead suggested a footpath to provide a safe walking connection.

Funding for construction was allocated in Council’s annual 2022/23 Delivery Program and Budget for new footpaths. Construction was completed in early 2023.

Thank you to all who provided feedback on the proposal. We are sure that the footpath provides improved and safer walking access for all of the community.

Background

We identified an important transit connection that will increase the use of active travel to help break the reliance on cars as the main mode of travel for local trips.

We proposed a 2.5m shared path on the eastern side of Collins Street and Lake Park Road between the existing shared path in Walsh Street and Narrabeen Lagoon.

This shared path would provide a valuable connection for pedestrians and bike riders in the local area to access facilities such as Pittwater Rugby Park, Warriewood B-Line and recreational facilities around Narrabeen Lagoon. However it should be noted that the proposal involves removing four on-street carparking spaces.

This project is aligned with our Move – Northern Beaches Transport Strategy and will provide users with a wider path, safer crossings and greater accessibility for our community to walk and cycle. It would also result in both transport and recreational benefits for our community.

We exhibited these proposals between Tuesday 25 January and Friday 18 February 2022 to seek thoughts on each proposal. We received 113 responses on the proposal.

The feedback collected during consultation indicated that the community would not support the proposed shared path in Collins Street, however, would support the construction of a footpath to enable a connected walking network in the local area.

Respondents indicated concern in relation to safety, the local street character, parking loss, heat generation and the existence of multiple shared paths on alternative routes.
