Outcomes of engagement

Overview

We are renewing the much-loved Michaela Howie Playground at Dee Why Beach.

The project will provide new play experiences aimed at children aged 0-8 years old and inspire more social interaction for families. The play space theme will pay homage to its location incorporating design elements inspired by the beach and the natural coastal environment.

Important components of the renewal include:

  • new play equipment including inclusive playground equipment elements
  • new seating areas.

What we heard

Thank you to the community for your support for the project and the feedback provided during the community consultation in April and May 2023.

Feedback showed that the community would like to see a high quality playground with exciting play experiences, with a greater emphasis on nature play and more seating opportunities. We understand that some people felt the proposal should be “bigger and better" but there are limitations with regards to size, height and budget. We will use this feedback when we look to renew the larger playground in nearby James Meehan Reserve in the future.

What's next?

We are now in the procurement phase seeking submissions from suitably qualified playground suppliers to design and construct the playground based on the concept design and community feedback. Construction is anticipated to commence in the second half of 2024.
