Streets as shared spaces - Avalon Beach

You are here:

  1. Home
  2. Streets as shared spaces - Avalon Beach

We want to make it easy and enjoyable for you to use our great places, like Avalon Beach village. So, through a trial we created a new safer space for people to shop and relax under the Streets as Shared Spaces program.

To create the temporary shared space, we widened footpaths, moved pedestrian crossings and installed seating and shade structures to enhance outdoor dining areas. A 10km/hour speed limit for vehicles was introduced.

At the completion of the 12-month trial, we asked you to share your feedback on how you used the space and presented a report to Council. At the meeting in August 2024, Council resolved to maintain the installation.

What's happening now?

At the Council meeting on 17 December 2025, Council accepted the tender of Nangle Pty Ltd for design services for streetscape upgrades, including the seating, other infrastructure and plantings in the shared space. Nangle as the landscape architect, will lead a team of experts including civil, hydraulic and stormwater engineers.

The design will be in keeping with the character of Avalon Beach and we will share the design with you. Click the + Follow button below to register for project updates.

What is Streets as Shared Spaces?

Quality public space is essential for quality of life and to support economic, environmental, social and cultural benefits, and streets are one of the most important forms of public space. The NSW Government is seeking to increase the amount of quality public space with trials that test permanent change to transform and re-energise our streets during the day and as part of the 24-hour economy, to get NSW moving again.

What is a 10km Shared Zone?

A Shared Zone is a road or network of roads where the road space is shared safely by vehicles and pedestrians. The maximum speed limit is always 10 km/h. This fact sheet prepared by Transport for NSW provides more detail.

Where can I park in the Avalon Beach commercial area?

On-street parking is available in the Avalon Beach commercial area, Avalon Beach carpark, Woolworths carpark and the Council carpark located in Avalon Parade.
