Outcome of idea gathering
What we heard
Thank you to everyone who took the time to drop a pin, make a comment or call us to ask a question during our idea gathering for additional EV locations. We collected your ideas over two weeks from Wednesday 20 July to Wednesday 3 August 2022.
We had a great response with over 200 location ideas and suggestions added to our map. The most popular locations for more EV charging were shops, beaches, parks and carparks across the Northern Beaches. There were also suggestions for charging at places like boat ramps, sportsgrounds and petrol stations.
The map is closed to new suggestions but you can still view what was suggested and where.
We've put together a snapshot report of the engagement which provides a view of the key findings and the verbatims of what we heard.
What happens next?
We will continue to work with the industry providers to develop plans to deliver the charging infrastructure on the Northern Beaches to support the increase in Electric Vehicle ownership.
It's important to understand that not all location ideas are considered due to required criteria such as access to power and parking spaces.
The information from this engagement will be used to help inform EV infrastructure providers as part of tender processes before committing to any works. We will consult with the community on individual charging stations before finalising new locations, providers and implementation timeframes.
The providers assist us with the provision of infrastructure as well as advising us of the most suitable locations and requirements needed for these locations. Ongoing maintenance of the charger infrastructure is the providers responsibility.
We assess the suitability of a potential site for a charging station based on the following factors:
- Existing and/or potential future demand for EV charging.
- Location - for the user to stop, spend time in the area or use local amenities.
- Safe access to the proposed charging infrastructure.
- Proximity to a suitable power supply.
We also consider sites that are located at key entry points to the Northern Beaches or near main road corridors.
Our aim is to provide universal charging systems that are not assigned to any particular vehicle manufacturer.
How we engaged
Northern Beaches Council are committed to supporting the use of electric vehicles (EV) by providing more spaces for EV charging stations across the Northern Beaches.
In addition to the spaces already available we wanted to know the locations you thought would be great for more EV charging stations. We collected location ideas over two weeks, from Wednesday 20 July to Wednesday 3 August.
Our Transport and Greener Communities teams took part in the NRMA Drive Days and Expo on the weekend of 23 and 24 July 2022 at Honda Australia Roadcraft Training (HART), 451 Mona Vale Rd, St Ives.
We met the community in person at the Expo, gathered the community's ideas on the map and provided the opportunity to call, email or write to us.
Why EV charging?
As part of our MOVE Northern Beaches Transport Strategy, we have a target 30 percent reduction in vehicle emissions by 2038 and our Climate Change Action Plan has a range of actions for delivering this outcome including facilitating and providing public EV charging infrastructure at key locations.
Council's Involvement
Council do not fund any EV charging stations. We assist by supporting and providing appropriate public space.
Our aim is to provide universal charging systems that are not assigned to any particular vehicle manufacturer.
Council invoice the providers of EV charging locations as outlined in our Delivery Program and Budget - fees and charges. You can find more detail in the Delivery Program 2022-2026.
The FY2022/23 fees are $1,737 (annual fee) and $565 (one-off application fee). Ongoing maintenance of the charger infrastructure is the providers responsibility.
How we assess locations
Council consider the suitability of a potential site for a charging station based on the following factors:
- Existing and/or potential future demand for EV charging.
- Location - for the user to stop, spend time in the area or use local amenities.
- Safe access to the proposed charging infrastructure.
- Proximity to a suitable power supply.
We also consider sites that are located at key entry points to the Northern Beaches or near main road corridors.
