Installation underway

Project update: May 2024

In order to assist the transition to electric vehicles in our area, JOLT, in partnership with Council, is deploying free public charging for up to 15 minutes in selected locations within the local community. All energy is from 100% renewable sources and is Green Power accredited.

We are pleased to advise that installation of the charging stations has commenced.

  • Installed and operational

The charging station was installed in February 2024 and is now operational.

    • Pittwater Park South Carpark, Palm Beach.
  • Installation scheduled

The charging stations at the following sites are scheduled to be installed in July, weather permitting:

    • Berry Reserve Carpark, Narrabeen
    • Collaroy Beach Reserve Carpark
    • Civic Centre Carpark, Dee Why
    • Kempbridge Avenue, Seaforth.

Unfortunately, installation cannot proceed at the following sites due to power supply issues:

  • Oaks Avenue (cnr The Strand), Dee Why
  • South Steyne, Manly.

We will work with JOLT to look for alternative sites and will then consult on proposed locations with the community.

Engagement outcomes

Local Traffic Committee

A report on the outcomes from Community Engagement was presented to the Northern Beaches Local Traffic Committee on Tuesday 10 October 2023, where the Committee endorsed the installation at the following seven locations:

  • Pittwater Park South carpark, Palm Beach
  • Berry Reserve Carpark, Narrabeen
  • Collaroy Beach Reserve Carpark
  • Civic Centre Carpark, Dee Why
  • Oaks Avenue (cnr The Strand), Dee Why
  • Kempridge Avenue, Seaforth
  • South Steyne, Manly.

The location proposed for Barrenjoey Road, Palm Beach, while well supported by the community, has been moved to Pittwater Park South, Palm Beach. This site was deemed more suitable due to the potential obstruction of pedestrian access (from the EV charging infrastructure) along the coastal footpath route.

The proposal for The Boulevarde, Newport is not proceeding due to potential flooding issues. As this location was well supported by the community, we will continue to work with JOLT to find an alternative, suitable location in Newport.

The approved locations will now commence the appropriate DA approval processes.

The proposal

The proposal

We identified eight (8) additional sites as suitable locations for installing electric vehicle charging stations and asked for your feedback on the proposed locations. Click on the markers on the map further down this page to see the detailed plans.

The proposal was exhibited between Friday 23 June and Sunday 23 July 2023, and received 329 submissions. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback.

Feedback indicated a high level of support for the proposed conversion of car parking spaces to EV charging spaces as it would encourage the uptake of EVs and contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions. Some concerns were raised, as outlined in the Community Engagement Report.

Proposed locations

  • Style 1

We proposed to install this design at these locations:

    • Barrenjoey Road, Palm Beach (outside Pittwater Park South carpark not proceeding, now installing within the carpark)
    • Berry Reserve Carpark, Narrabeen
    • Collaroy Beach Reserve Carpark
    • Civic Centre Carpark, Dee Why
    • Oaks Ave (cnr The Strand), Dee Why
    • South Steyne, Manly.

The units look different from those previously approved and installed across other Northern Beaches locations, however, there is no change in charge speed or functionality.

  • Style 2

We proposed to install this design at these locations:

    • The Boulevarde, Newport (not proceeding, exploring other sites in Newport)
    • Kempbridge Ave, Seaforth.

At these sites, we are repurposing pre-existing Ausgrid infrastructure, where equipment is attached directly to existing Ausgrid kiosk substations.
