New playground coming soon

Project update: July 2024

Freshwater Beach Masterplan works continue as we revitalise the precinct for our community to enjoy.

Freshwater Beach Village Playground

We have commenced the upgrade of the Freshwater Beach Village Playground.

The upgrade involves the removal of the existing playground equipment, structures and landscaping and will be replaced with the following:

  • new playground equipment and softfall flooring
  • new shade sails
  • new street furniture including seating, BBQ's, drinking fountain, bins
  • new pathway connections
  • new landscaping including sandstone boulders, turf, fencing, plants and trees to complement the natural surrounds.

We anticipate the new space will be open for the community to enjoy in November 2024 (weather permitting).

We acknowledge that construction can be disruptive, and we thank you for your patience while we complete this important community project.

Refer to the construction staging timelines and staging plan implementation map below for more details on what's to come.

Engagement outcomes

Following consultation with the community last year, we are pleased to provide the completed Community Engagement Report for this project.

We listened to you and made the following key changes to the overall designs:

  • removal of the sweeping path from Moore Road to the surf club
  • the 'Artful Play' area will now be a simple renewal of the existing playground with some landscaping
  • the main playground has had a variety of modifications based on community feedback, including
    • monkey bars
    • slides
    • nature play and
    • a perimeter fence
  • the staged delivery plan has been developed to ensure efficient delivery in off peak times and to minimise impact to park users.

Check out the revised staging plan and new concept images for the small, ocean front playground where 'Artful Play' was previously included.

Project history

Freshwater Beach and surrounds is a popular destination for local residents and visitors alike. It is often described as a special place that brings the community together.

In 2017-2018 we worked with our community, including a committed project working group, to develop the Freshwater Coastal Open Space Masterplan. This document set out some high level recommendations for upgrading the public open spaces, meeting future recreation needs, improving connectivity and celebrating the heritage of the area.

We recently invited you to view and share your thoughts on the more detailed concept designs for the Freshwater Beach area. These included a new playground, new ramps and shared footpaths, a new public artwork and a new lookout with terraced seating.

The proposed designs look to address general amenity, accessibility, play and maintenance requirements in the Freshwater Beach area. It is the first major renewal of the area to be undertaken since the 1980s.

We used your feedback to finalise the designs and establish a staged implementation plan for the improvements.

The community were invited to complete a comment form, email us and write to us during the consultation period.

Comments were invited from Monday 18 July to Sunday 14 August 2022.
