Funding
Funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), and being rolled out by Intellihub.
We have funding to install 7 streetside EV chargers (22kW ), and asked our community to nominate which of 12 previously identified sites you think should be the priority sites. We received 429 responses - thank you to all who provided feedback.
There was overall support for the project, however some concerns were raised. These included funding and cost to the community, and concerns that some of the proposed sites were not suitable due to limited availability of parking.
Project costs will be covered by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), and users will pay to use the service. After reviewing feedback and concerns raised, some sites are no longer under consideration at this time.
Further details, including all verbatim comments, are available in the Community Engagement Report.
After reviewing all feedback received, a report on the engagement outcomes was presented to the Local Traffic Committee on Wednesday 8 November 2023. The Committee approved the recommendation to support the 12-month trial at the following 7 sites:

Previous community consultation has helped us identify the 12 sites listed below for consideration.
We have funding for 7 of the 22kW EV chargers, and we asked the community to nominate which sites should be considered as a priority. As more funding becomes available, we will look to roll out more charging stations to the remaining sites.

In August 2021, Council adopted the Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure Plan, following community and stakeholder engagement.
The plan identifies the framework for establishing a network of EV charging stations and outlines conditions for the installation, management, maintenance and removal of EV charging infrastructure on identified Council sites.
This proposal is in line with our MOVE - Northern Beaches Transport Strategy 2038 which sets a target of 30 percent reduction in vehicle emissions by 2038, and our Climate Change Action Plan which has a range of actions for delivering this outcome including facilitating and providing public EV charging infrastructure at key locations.
All charging stations have been installed and are now operational:
More information on the history of the project and how sites were identified, is available under Background.
After conducting their final pre-installation inspections, Ausgrid has advised that the EV charging stations approved for sites at Governor Phillip Park, Palm Beach (outside Dunes Palm Beach) and 15 Coronation Street, Mona Vale can no longer proceed due to load limit issues. Letters have been sent to neighbouring properties.
We selected two alternative sites that were considered under the original proposal, and reported these to the Local Traffic Committee on Tuesday 6 February 2024 for approval:
The Committee supported the installation of a charging station at 19 Yulong Avenue, Terry Hills, however, deferred consideration for the station at 118 Allambie Road, Allambie Heights pending a review of safety and options for an alternative site.
Following a review of safety concerns and options for an alternative site, the proposal for 118 Allambie Road, Allambie Heights was approved by the Committee at its meeting on Tuesday 5 March 2024.
EV charging stations and signage have been installed, with the stations ready to use, at the following sites:
The sites have been listed on EV charging apps.

The sites will be listed on EV charging apps shortly.
The charging station for Dearin Reserve (opposite 13 Kalinya Street, Newport) has been installed and will soon be ready for use.

We engaged with the community between July to August 2022 for Electric Vehicle charging locations - you can view the outcomes of the consultation here.
We had a great response with over 200 location ideas and suggestions added to our map. The most popular locations for more EV charging were shops, beaches, parks and carparks across the Northern Beaches.
The current project has strict power pole suitability guidelines and technical criteria, due to the charging infrastructure to be installed, Council and relevant project stakeholders have inspected the locations and developed the proposed shortlist for site-specific community consultation.
Pending the outcome of community consultation, we anticipate the EV streetside charging stations will be installed late this year.
Once installed, the pilot will run for 12 months to achieve project objectives including technical, regulatory, engineering, community and commercial learnings. Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) will publish a report with these findings and submit a copy to Council for review.
Once Council reviews the ARENA report, and dependant on the outcome of the 12 month trial, Council will assess and determine the most appropriate action.
If the EV charging station is located within a Reserve or Beach Carpark and your vehicle does not display a valid Northern Beaches Beach Parking Permit, you will be required to pay for parking as normal (either via the nearby parking meter or via the ‘Park N Pay’ app).
If it is located within a Manly Parking Scheme Area, you will be limited to the 2-hour time limit in the bay, until 10pm as stated on the signage.
Yes, you will require a Type 2 cable of sufficient length to charge your car.
Charging your EV will be limited to 3 hours between 8am to 8pm during this trial period. Following the completion of the 12-month trial, the data will be reviewed with the possibility to extend parking restrictions after an assessment at each site is undertaken.
*Locations in the Manly Parking Scheme Area will be limited to 2 hours for consistency within the area.
Please check the signage at the location when you park and charge to avoid fines.
Prices will vary to establish the optimal pricing as part of this ARENA-funded trial, however they will be set at prices comparable to other EV charging services.
The charging service will be managed via Exploren, an EVSE customer experience app which outlines billing, time limits, and other tools for interfacing with the electricity grid.
Level 2, 22kW EV chargers.
Due to the location of the existing suitable street power poles, there are limitations as to where charging infrastructure can be installed, to fit in with the existing road conditions and to also maximise the most allocated parking bays for all vehicles.
As EVs have different charging point positions on different models, it can be quite challenging to find a solution to suit every single vehicle at every location. We have endeavoured to utilise 90-degree parking where possible so vehicles can park either front or rear to kerb, but some parallel parking sites may not be suitable for all EV types due to the location of the EV charging infrastructure and the charging port on your EV.
Signage provided will be standard Transport for NSW signage and is enforceable under NSW Road Rules 2014.
Non-charging electric vehicles and non-electric vehicles parked within the sign-posted times, or EVs overstaying the sign-posted time limit are examples that can be subject to enforcement while parked in these dedicated spaces.
You can view all EV public charging stations across the Northern Beaches area and Australia here.
Funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), and being rolled out by Intellihub.
Supplied by Origin Energy - for all the energy required to charge EVs from the new chargers, the equivalent amount of certified renewable energy will be put back into the grid.
We reviewed locations proposed by our community and developed a shortlist of locations suitable for this style of charging station.
