Improving pedestrian safety near schools

As part of the Federal Stimulus - School Infrastructure Program, we have secured funding for pedestrian improvements around 32 local schools.

This important work to improve safety for school children and their families will be carried out in three key stages over the next 18 months.

What is happening?

The proposed work includes upgrades or replacement of school pedestrian crossings, and new footpaths, shared paths and kerb ramps.

Pedestrian safety improvements may include raising the existing school pedestrian crossing or relocating the crossing to a safer location with better lines of sight or away from intersections.

Raising a pedestrian crossing makes the crossings more obvious to drivers, encourages vehicles to slow down as they approach the crossing, as well as increasing the visibility of pedestrians who are walking on the crossing.
